For example, if you have ever wanted to mount a DSLR camera directly to the top of a tripod or monopod, without using a ball head or arcur-thingy plate, then you will doubtless have realised that underneath the camera is a 1/4" thread socket and on the top of the tripod etc is a 3/8" bolt. Or vice-versa.
